Who are the traffickers, who are being trafficked, that signs to look for, and how to help. Does human trafficking occur on Cape Cod? The unfortunate answer is yes. As a vacation/resort destination human trafficking can be easily hidden. Earlier this summer a local businessman was indicted in a sex trafficking case in Dennis. We have invitedCape Cod PATH to speak about identifying human trafficking indicators that occur in our communities.

Cape Cod PATH (People Against Trafficking Humans) is a grass-roots task force working to end human trafficking (HT) and its risks in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Katie Parache is an eight year veteran of the Barnstable Police Department currently assigned to patrol. She serves as a field training officer, sexual assault investigator, and is a Crisis Negotiator for the Cape Cod Regional SWAT team. Officer Parache has worked on investigations involving human trafficking and through partnership with other agencies, both law enforcement and civilian, works to help victims of human trafficking.

Janice Hank has been involved in Cape Cod PATH for about two years, and Chair of Cape Cod PATH for little over a year. After seeing a presentation on Human Trafficking in Wellfleet, she knew she had to get involved and spread the word to other people and organizations on the Cape. As a retired elementary school teacher, the importance of educating the youth and adults about human trafficking on Cape Cod, and the dangers of social media, which could lead to sex trafficking, is of upmost importance to her.

Lois Hirshberg has an M.Ed in Community Counseling and a MA in Expressive Therapy.  She was the Guidance Counselor at the Coombs School in Mashpee for 17 years.  She retired from the Mashpee Schools in 1996 to continue her art passion.  Lois has been a ceramics artist for over 40 years.  She now teaches at Truro Center for the Arts and Featherstone Art Center (Martha’s Vineyard).  Even though she is not working as a child therapist any longer, she still has a strong desire to help   children in need.  She has been on the Cape Cod PATH Task Force for almost 2 years and is now Treasurer of that organization.
