Mashpee School to Careers Mock Interviews

Thursday, December 15, from 8:30-9:50 a.m. in the Mashpee High School Library

One of the culminating events for  Mashpee High School’s School to Careers Class is to participate in mock job interviews with area professionals.

Mashpee High School Seniors have spent the fall semester exploring their career interests and opportunities with guest speakers, job-shadowing, and simulations.

Mock Interviews are set up in a round robin format where students get a chance to experience various styles of interviewing.

This is always a fun activity for the interviewers and a wonderful educational experience for the students. Students start the day quite nervous, but end up engaged and confident. Materials for the day are provided by the school.  To volunteer please contact CCHRA Newsletter editor: Joan McDonald, joan@ciwib.org / 508-775-5900

Recruiting employees from outside the United States can help employers in finding critical skills or in addressing seasonal staffing needs.  However, employment-related visas can be complex and intimidating for the HR professional who is unfamiliar with the regulations and requirements.  This month’s CCHRA program will give you an overview of various nonimmigrant visas such as the H-1B, H-2B, J-1, and others that employers turn to when hiring from overseas.  You’ll learn more about the type of employee who can access each visa, the employer’s requirements, and the processes for initiating applications as well as tools and resources for further information.

This program has been approved for 1.0 (General ) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute. Please be sure to note the program ID number on your recertification application form. For more information about certification or recertification, please visit the HR Certification Institute website at www.hrci.org

The use of this seal is not an endorsement by the HR Certification Institute of the quality of the program. It means that this program has met the HR Certification Institute’s criteria to be pre-approved for recertification credit.

Speaker:      Katherine Murphy, Murphy, Hesse, Toomey & Lehane, LLP.

Mistakes and challenges in the wage and hour areas are widespread and costly.  Much of the litigation in the wage and hour area is based upon an employer’s failure to pay for work time, such as prep time, working through breaks, working outside the scheduled workday, and working at home.  These errors can result in unpaid straight time wages, or worse, unpaid overtime wages.  In addition, problems arise when employers improperly classify employees as exempt when they should be classified as non-exempt.

In this special, extended program for December, you’ll learn about the key aspects of wage and hour law as well as best practices that will ensure your organization is legally compliant.  Topics to be covered will include:

  • The Massachusetts Wage Payment Act
  • Equal pay laws, such as the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act and the Fair Labor Standards Equal Pay Act
  • Compensation for breaks under the Massachusetts Break Rule
  • Record keeping and retention requirements
  • Classifying employees as exempt vs. non-exempt
